Register.BG is the organization to which has been delegated the management of the country code top-level domain .bg.

Register.BG provides reliable and secure registration, support, and management of domain names in the .bg zone and the sub-zones. Thus, the registered domain names have a high level of quality: distinction of subjects and demanded content in internet, theft protection, possibility for management with digital signature certificates, as well as usage of DNSSEC (DNS security), ensuring a high level of protection against identity usurpation of the information servers of the clients.

Register.BG performs the functions of last resort registrar of domain names in the .bg zone and the sub-zones.

Register.BG has considerable know-how in the field of internet technologies, databases, and development of web-based software solutions. The company employs highly-qualified young professionals with desire for growth and innovations.

At the present, Register.BG operates a modern and fully functional system for domain name registration, based on the Registry–Registrar–Registrant model, and has ability to launch immediately domain name registration in the new internationalized top-level domain with country code (IDN ccTLD).

When working with digital signature certificates, all actions with the system can be performed remotely, quickly, without paper usage, and with a maximum level of security for the registrants.

The domain name registration in Cyrillic is implemented simultaneously in both the .bg and .бг zones (whenever this is possible in the .bg zone). The parallel domain name registration in Cyrillic in both zones shall provide to the registrants a better representation in internet!

On the occasion of the 20^th anniversary of offering internet services in Bulgaria, during the new 2010 Register.BG and Digital Systems, with the support of the Government, will provide to all students in the country the opportunity of free registration and one-year support service for a domain name in the .bg zone or the sub-zones, along with DNS hosting, e-mail, and web hosting. In addition, when the management of the .бг zone is delegated to Register.BG, the same offer shall be valid for this zone as well. The initiative aims to promote the internet domain names in the national internet space and to help significantly reduce the registration and annual support fee for the domain names after completion of the free period.

The Registry of domain names in the .bg zone was established in 1991 by then the first and only internet service provider in Bulgaria – Digital Systems. In 2001 the domain name registration and support functions were separated from Digital Systems and transferred to the newly-created company Register.BG.

During this 18-year period the Registry of domain names in the .bg zone has been through many stages. Within the first 7 years the domain name registration and support was free of charge, and within the first 4 years – „open“ and free of charge. Nevertheless, the amount of registered domain names did not exceed the number of 1000. We all remember these difficult years of transition – extremely low usage of internet services in business and administration, lack of public activity, absence of communal interest, coupled with the long economic crisis.

In 1995 due to the large period (4 years), in which the main subjects in the country – private and public, had not registered domain names, it became necessary the Registry to introduce restrictive conditions for domain name registration – requiring grounds for the desired name, forming the domain name. This was necessary since around the world a process was observed of improper registration by dishonest individuals of domain names matching the intellectual property rights of subjects established in the market and in the public space. The main goal of these individuals is blackmail for transferring of the domain name to the owner of the intellectual rights for a much higher price than the registration fee of the Registry.

The period, in which mandatory grounds for the internet name was required, was difficult for both sides: for the Registry, and for you – the registrants, but we believe that we have made the right choice by providing a „smooth period“ for domain name registration for the subjects established in the market and in the public space, and the intellectual property owners.

Since 1998 the Registry has introduced payment for the services.

With the improvement of the economic climate in our country after 2003 and the more significant deployment of internet technologies in the business and everyday life, a growth of domain name registrations was observed. Register.BG has started the development of a new modern system for automated domain name registration and service. The introduction of the system in real operation began in August 2006.

In 2006 Register.BG extended the possibilities for domain name registration in second-level zones. The zones are: .a.bg ... .z.bg .0.bg ... .9.bg. When registering domain names in the new zones, grounds for registration of the internet name is not required.

During the same year, due to the increased amount of the registered domain names, Register.BG has significantly reduced the registration and support fee and provided an option for the registrants to pay fees through the system for electronic payments – ePay.BG. The owners of digital signature certificates have been given the opportunity to perform on-line request and setup of their domain names.

In 2007 Register.BG completed the implementation of DNSSEC in the .bg zone and the sub-zones, and on 15.01.2007 signed the .bg zone and the sub-zones, thus becoming the second Registry in the world to sign its TLD zone after the Swedish Registry. The possibility for identity theft of web and other information servers of the internet users is prevented through the DNSSEC technology.

During the meeting of ICANN in Lisbon in the spring of 2007, Register.BG, together with the ccTLD registries of Greece, Russia, and others, proposed to ICANN launching of a procedure for an accelerated delegation of IDN ccTLD. Subsequently, the procedure became IDN ccTLD Fast Track Process.

On 29.08.2007 Register.BG provided the users access to DNSSEC interface which allows each registrant of domain names in the .bg zone and the sub-zones to manage and setup DNSSEC using digital signature certificates.

Register.BG is the first TLD Registry in the world that has implemented a technology for automated DNSSEC management and setup. The DNSSEC service is provided by Register.BG without an extra fee.

As a result of the significant increase of popularity and usage of the .bg domain names, in 2008 Register.BG extended the possibilities for domain name registration in the .bg zone, allowing registrants on their own risk to register domain names without providing grounds for registration for the internet name. In order to solve potential disputes between registrants and domain name applicants, Register.BG establishes a Dispute committee, consisting of three independent external experts – two lawyers and an intellectual property expert. In the event of disputes Register.BG convenes the Dispute committee and provides a meeting place, a technical secretary (without the right of voting), and the necessary documents for dispute processing. The dispute is processed based on the existing and subsequently submitted documents and opinions of the parties, the laws of the Republic of Bulgaria, and the Terms and Conditions for domain name registration and support in the .bg zone and the sub-zones. Up to now, out of 35 processed and solved disputes for one year, there has not been any court suspension of decision made by the Dispute committee and Register.BG.

The same year Register.BG has extended the possibilities for domain name setup in the .bg zone and the sub-zones, allowing the DNS setup to be realized with IP addresses in IPv6 format as well.

On 05.09.2009 Register.BG expanded the domain name registration services in the .bg zone and the sub-zones by giving the opportunity to register Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs) in Cyrillic. The registration of the IDNs requires the internet name to be written only in Cyrillic and to contain at least one letter, which can be visually distinguished from the Latin alphabet (one of the letters: б, г, д, ж, и, й, л, п, ф, ц, ч, ш, щ, ъ, ь, ю, я).

On 15.10.2009 successfully completed the tests of the system developed by Register.BG for performing the Registrar functions of internet domain names in the .bg zone and the sub-zones via specialized interface to the registration system. Everyone who would like to become a Registrar shall be offered a contract and given an Operating manual and access to the test system.
